This list of FAQ's refers to capella professional / capella 2004. Deviations of previous versions are indicated as such.

Before you search this list for a solution to your problem . . .

  • . . . please confirm, that you are using the latest version of capella: Load capella and open menu help | about capella. The version number will be displayed. Compare your version number with the version in our Download section If necessary, download the current version and install it on your PC. This might already solve your problem.
This list of FAQ's does not cover any problems, that have been resolved through step-ups or service releases.
  • This list of FAQ's cannot replace the manual. You should also have acquired a fair knowledge of capella and be familiar with the workings of Microsoft Windows and you should have an understanding of music terminology (voice, staff, system, chord, etc.); see manual pages 19 ff.
  • If you have bought the mass merchandiser retail version (capella 200 or capella-studio) you own a very capable and affordable program with reduced functionality. In this case please confirm, that your problem is not related to these limitations. Differences between capella 1200 and capella professional / capella 2400 are listed here.
  • At this point we want to express our gratitude to our script authors, who have extended capella's capabilities with a number of excellent add-ons.
You can find Mr. Becker's scripts here
    and Mr Villiger's scripts here.
Both authors provide links to additional script authors on their web sites.

Python failed to install during installation of capella professional / capella 2004 Resolve as follows:
  • Use Windows Explorer to access this folder on your installation CD: Programs\EN\redist
  • Doubleclick Python-2.3.5.exe
  • Complete this installation and access the CD again in the same folder
  • Doubleclick hhupd.exe and follow the prompts on screen

This procedure installs Python 2.3.5 as an essential addition to capella. At the same time, the help file will be updated. capella will not function properly without this Python installation.

When I download a stepup or a maintenance release, does it include all previously released stepups? Yes, you only need to install the most recent update.
You can find it here.
What about this product activation? Detailed information on this issue is available here.
The license doesn't work. In spite of correctly entering the license data (no typos), capella remains in demo-mode. There could be several reasons for this to happen. Please call us at the office while you are at your PC with all relevant documentation at hand.
Is the license data incomplete? There is only one long serial number . . . That is correct. Only this serial number is required to license capella. You'll see it immediately, when the licensing dialog opens.
Should I re-install capella, when a problem arises? No! Re-installation is often seen as a cure-all, which is rarely the case. This list of FAQ's or our hot-line will tell you, whether re-installation would solve your specific problem.
Can I remove individual icons from the toolbars to save space? No, only entire toolbars can be de-selected from view. All toolbars can be placed anywhere on your screen.
Regardless of where I place the toolbars, they re-appear in their default position whenever I re-start capella. It's not a bug, it's a feature!
Please de-activate this feature in menu view | toolbars...
Error message "capella caused an error through invalid page module MFC42.DLL . . ." or "File MSVCP60.DLL could not be found" and capella freezes. Parts of your operating system are outdated. Please get an update directly from Microsoft here. Please watch out for correct language selection and then choose "Download here".
In general we recommend to use capella 2004 only with Windows 98SE upwards.
Do I need to have the previous version installed, when I upgrade to capella 2004? No, technically speaking, all our updates are complete new releases, that do not patch into any existing installations. You are therefore free to decide, when you want to uninstall the previous version, allowing you any amount of time to familiarize yourself with the new release.
I cannot open "Help". Nothing happens, when I try to call up help. capella's help requires Microsoft Internet Explorer to be installed on your system. This program is automatically installed on all Windows systems. Should it not have been installed on your system, please go here to download the current version.
When I try to select a different style, capella informs me of a missing font. See manual page 98 or help section 8.8: "Notes about capella fonts". During installation, additional fonts have been copied into the following folder: C:\Program Files\capella-software\capella professional\fonts
Error message under Windows 98SE: "File GDIPlus.DLL could not be found". After that, capella does not start any more. This file is not part of the standard Windows 98SE installation but is normally installed as part of the capella installation. Please re-install your copy of capella with all options selected and overwrite your existing installation completely.
capella crashes, when I use [Ctrl[ + [Del] to delete the last staff. This problem existed in capella professional / capella 2004 up to version 5.1-08a. Please download and install the current stepup to update your version of capella here. However, we do not recommend this complete deletion of the last staff, as an empty score does not make much sense.
How can I get backup copies of my scores? Select menu extras | options | general, activate both options under backup options and set the time interval to suit your requirements.
Where can I find my "lost" mousepiano?

There are two ways, to find the lost mousepiano:

  • Increase your monitor's resolution to the next higher setting, i.e. from 1024x768 to 1280x1024. In most cases the mousepiano will now be visible again. Drag it to the center of your screen and then reset your monitor to the previous resolution.
  • In case the previous step does not work, you need to edit the system registry. Only advanced windows users should attempt this step!
    • Click the Windows start button and select "Run...", then type "regedit.exe" (without the inverted commas) into the "Open" dialog and click OK.
    • The Registry Editor displays a folder tree. Doubleclick on "HKEY_CURRENT_USER".
    • Doubleclick on "Software".
    • Doubleclick on "WHC".
    • Doubleclick on "capella".
    • Click on the key "piano" in the right window and select menu edit | delete. Confirm the deletion wit clicking OK.
When you next start capella, the mousepiano will appear in its usual place.
Instead of notes and keys, capella displays weird signs or nothing at all.

Reduce your number of installed typefaces to below 100. Then uninstall "capella3.ttf" and re-install it as follows:

  • Click the Windows Start button and select "Control Panel"
  • Click on "Fonts" and delete surplus typefaces (be careful not to delete any typefaces that are marked with a red O. Only delete typefaces that are marked with TT.
  • Delete the typeface "capella3.ttf".
  • Restart your PC.
  • Re-install the typeface "capella3.ttf" by opening the Fonts folder via the Control Panel and selecting menu file | install new font...
  • Insert the capella installation CD. In case it starts automatically, exit the CD. It just has to lie in the CD/DVD drive.
  • From the Add Fonts dialog access your CD and open folder Programs\EN\capella\Fonts.
  • Select the typeface and click OK.
In spite of unlimited administrator rights, capella crashes soon after start-up on Windows 200/XP. Please check your settings. capella automatically places a backup copy of your current score into the folder "My Documents\capella\Backup copies". Make sure, that the "My Documents" folder or the "My Documents\capella\Backup" folder is not write protected.

capella 2002/1200 4.0

I have unlimited administrator rights, but capella crashes after a few minutes on a Windows 2000/XP system.
Please check your settings. capella automatically places a backup copy of your current score into the folder "My Documents\capella\Backup copies". Make sure, that the "My Documents" folder is not write protected.

capella 2002/1200 4.0

When I start capella 2002, I get the message "Wrong or missing file "START.BMP".
This is only a minor snag, that does not negatively impact on the program. You can download the zip file here, unzip it and place it in your capella program folder.

capella 2002/1200 4.0

Licensing capella 2002: After touching Enter or clicking OK, the PC freezes.
Normally, there should appear an error message, indicating a typing error. Prevent this problem as follows:
  • To avoid typos, transfer the exact spelling, even if it is incorrect.
  • Do not fill fields with spaces.
  • Only one space is allowed between number and street name.
  • Do not add any information that is not part of your license document.

capella 2002/1200 4.0

capella 2002 crashes under Windows 2000/XP a few minutes after starting.
In menu extras | options | general deactivate the automatic backup copies every "x" minutes. You probably don't have writing rights in the program folder of your PC.

capella 1200 4.0

I cannot licence my program! The serial number of my license card consists of 6 blocks, but the license dialog only shows 5 blocks or refuses to accept my license number.
Select menu help | about capella... and verify that capella 1200 is displayed in the dialog. If not, you have installed the wrong program. Uninstall this program version via "Control Panel" and "Add or Remove Programs". Then re-install capella, explicitly selecting version 1200.
How can I adjust text fields that were placed correctly in the score under Windows 98, but have now shifted under Windows 2000/XP? This problem is not caused by capella but by the modified font handling under Windows 2000/XP compared to Windows 98/ME. This behavior can be adjusted through re-calibration. Windows sets the size of text fields independent of the gap between staff lines. But unfortunately, Windows resizes the text itself if you modify the settings at control panel | display | settings | advanced | dpi setting. To counteract this distortion, you can calibrate the size of text as follows: Open the file "calibrate.cap" located in your capella program folder and follow the instructions appearing on your screen.
How can I create a continuous multiple beat rest? This can only be accomplished, if the staff does not contain any further notes or rests and to ensure accurate playback, the beat must be set correctly. Set the rest as follows:
  • Switch on justify by clicking the relevant icon with the two horizontal gray/green bars or press [Shift] + [Ctrl] + [R].
  • Select menu format | score... | note spacing and set the absolute spacing to 400% and tick "Allow extra compression of notes..."
  • You can then shift the multiple beat rest along the staff line by clicking to the left of the rest and holding down the [J] key while touching the right arrow key.
How can I write notes without setting a clef and generally without any accidentals? According to current notation rules, this kind of note writing is not acceptable. Clef and, if applicable, accidentals must be set at the beginning of each staff. You can however select the correct key and press [Shift] + [F5] to open the Clef, key and time signature... dialog. On the time signature tab select "No time signature". Enter your melody step by step and correct the individual note values afterwards, if necessary. Select the line breaks according to your requirements and if needed add the lyrics. Mark the first note in each staff and draw a square. Position this square to cover the clef and any accidentals and format the square with white filling and white border.
How do I write an extensive score without time signature? Before you type notes into your new score, draw a system cursor vertically to the left of your first system. It will appear in front of the clefs. Now press [Shift] + [F5] to open the Clef, key and time signature... dialog. On the time signature tab select "No time signature". This setting will then be active for all systems of your score. To modify an existing score, you proceed in the same way. You must however repeat the procedure for each new system.
How can I shift an individual note in capella professional / capella 2004? Place the cursor in front of the note. Touch the up or down arrow keys while holding down either the [O] key (letter, not number!) or the [P] key. While the [O] key will cause a diatonic shift, the [P] key will cause a chromatic shift. Repeat touching the arrow keys until you have the desired note. To shift notes horizontally, hold down the [J] key while touching the right or left arrow key as many times as required.
How can I shift accidentals in capella professional / capella 2004? Mark the note head by holding down the [Ctrl] key and clicking the note head with the mouse. A blinking black square appears. While holding down the [J] key you can touch the right or left arrow keys as many time as required to position the accidental where you want it to be.
How can I notate tremoli in piano accompaniment? Mr Villiger offers a corresponding script here, together with brief instructions.
How can I set continuous page numbering?
  • Mark the first note or rest on the first staff by dragging the mouse over it.
  • Select menu graphics | plain text ([Shift] + [Alt] + [X]) and type a “#” into the text field and click "OK".
  • Select menu view | page layout ([Shift] + [F11]).
  • Click the "#" that is now positioned next to the marked note. A red square appears Drag the red square onto the small gray square that appears in the top left margin. Make sure that you drag the red square and not the associated "#" character.
  • The number 1 has now replaced the "#" character in the text field next to the note / rest. Drag this number 1 to anywhere on the page, where you want your page numbers to be placed.
  • Choose menu file | page setup to determine at which number page numbering should begin.
  • If you prefer alternate right (odd) and left (even) page numbers, proceed as follows:
  • Create two page number fields, one each in the right and left margin, following the above instructions.
  • Right-click one of the page numbers and select “Edit” from the context menu.
  • A dialog box appears that offers you multiple choices on how to set your page numbering.
  • Repeat this editing procedure accordingly for the other page number.
How can I notate the correct accidental(s) for a MIDI import? Some MIDI files do not include the relevant information about the key of the piece of music. capella however can find and set the correct accidentals as follows: Mark the entire score with menu edit | mark | entire score ([Ctrl] + [A]). Transpose the score into the assumed correct key with key change via menu format | transposition ([Alt] + [F5]). While the entire score is still marked, execute a reverse transposition by the same interval without key change.
How can I notate correct accidentals to match the selected key when I enter notes via keyboard or mouse piano? Select menu extras | options | sound | input to set your general preferences for sharps and flats and further make individual adjustments by clicking the black piano keys.
Why can't I set a tenuto line? This is most probably a display error of your monitor. You will see the lines, if you select a slightly different zoom level (menu view | zoom). Regardless of the display, they will definitely appear on the printed version of your score.
How can I number repeat boxes? Set a repeat box at the required position. Slowly move the mouse across the repeat box, until the color changes. Right-mouse-click to open the context menu and select edit. Select shape and choose an option in the number section of the dialog box.
How can I quickly create a guitar tablature from a capella score? Use Mr Herzog's script "Gittarero", which you can download here.
How can I remove incorrect page numbers from a score that I created using the score wizard? Download Mr Lemmel's script "Seitentexte" here and then choose "alle alten Seitenobjekte löschen" (remove all old page objects). If necessary deselect the header. You should also save any text below the last staff of the system to re-insert these elements again after the script has run. To re-create page numbering, you follow these steps.
Automatic transposition does not work when inserting key changes or a different clef. Select menu extras | options | note entry and tick the required parameters.
Notes and staff lines are covered by text fields. As a result of an incompatibility between different Windows versions, the background of text fields under Windows 2000/XP is white and not transparent as in Windows 98/ME. This causes partial cover of notes and staff lines. To prevent this from happening, right-mouse-click the text fields and select order | behind notes from the context menu.

How can I change the gap between the staff lines and thereby influence the size of the entire score? Open the template system (menu view | template system) and open menu template system| spacing | dimensions and enter a value for "staff line spacing". To deviate from values in the drop down list, enter preferred numeric value directly.
How can I change the gap between two staves from the standard gap that has been set for the entire score? Select menu format | staveS | space. Here you can increase (but not decrease) the value from the one set in the template system.
How can I change the tempo within a score? The tempo can be changed at the beginning of each new system. To change the speed for the entire score, choose menu edit | mark | all to select the entire score and then choose menu format | system | general to set the new tempo.
How do I write drum rolls? Please see manual page 64, Tremolo Bars.
How can I delete one voice or one staff from a system? Place the cursor on the relevant voice. Select menu edit | delete | stave/voice. Repeat this step, until the last voice has been deleted. Together with the last voice, the relevant staff will have been deleted. Only once this stave has been removed from the entire score, can you remove it from the relevant template system as well. This is intended as a safety feature, to prevent your score from getting corrupted.
How can I configure capella, that whenever I start the program, it loads my preferred system of notation as a default score? Save your preferred template as "standard.cap" in the templates folder below the capella program folder.
After setting the left and right margins, the score looks dreadful: In the right margin, some notes are suspended in midair! capella indicates, that there are too many notes within the system. Re-distribute the notes amongst all systems (i.e. with menu extras | score wrap around) or select format | score | note spacing and tick "allow extra compression". In this case notes will be forced to fit into the system, possibly to the point of illegibility.
How can I select individual note heads to format them separately? Hold down [Ctrl] and click the relevant note head. A small marker appears. In case you cannot "hit" the note head, zoom in to increase the display size.
Several notes have been marked and an articulation sign, i.e. an accent, has been selected, but only the first note receives the sign. Do not generate the accent via the music symbol tool (letter S on blue dot), but instead via menu format | notes/rests | notes | articulation signs. This way all the notes receive the accent or whichever sign you choose.
The bar of a singing voice contains a whole rest, while the piano roll shows a chord of whole notes. While the whole rest is centered, the chord is pushed to the left bar-line. Select menu format | notes/rests | general | correct horizontal position to change this behavior. However, this representation is commonly used. Notes are always positioned, where they begin to sound, while whole rests are normally centered (probably because whole rests do not necessarily have four strokes, like whole notes).
When I enter notes with the mouse, and I click too high above the staff, the note appears as belonging to the staff above. The distance between the staves is crucial. The visible distance is invisibly divided into an area above the current staff and an area below the upper staff. When you select view | co lour information, ([F11]) you can see these areas represented by a gray bar in the left margin. You can set these distances in the Template System. Leger lines will also indicate the mouse cursor's position relative to which staff.
The dot behind a dotted note melts into the flag of an eighth note. This will only happen, when the note is placed on a line as opposed to between two lines. Lengthen the stem of the note by holding down [N] and touching the relevant cursor key.
How can I alternate eighth notes and rests in such a way, that the beam connects the notes bridging the rest? Currently this can only be achieved with a bit of magic: Type three notes and format the middle note as invisible and mute. Now insert the rest as a graphic symbol over the - invisible - middle note. If this configuration is required regularly, you can copy it and adapt it via transposition. Alternatively you can adjust individual notes with O or P and the arrow keys. There is also a suitable script on Mr Becker's web site.
A system must be split, to indicate the start of a coda. Select graphics | geometric object | rectangle and place it in the required position over the system. Then format it with white fill and no border.
Older music scores in particular tend to change the time signature continuously, i.e. alternating between 2/2 and 3/2. Set up your system for the larger time signature (3/2) and insert the sign for 2/2 from the menu insert | clef/key/time signature and insert a fixed bar line ( insert | fixed bar line ) where required.
How do I set a score, that is neither Major not Minor, i.e. has only b and Cis as accidentals? In this case you could set F-major and insert the sharp at the beginning of the staff as a graphic symbol. In order to also correct the playback, you need to set Cis and suppress the accidental via menu format | notes/rests | heads.
When I format a triplet, the results are unpredictable, including a program crash, when the triplet contains a rest at the beginning. Work-around: Mark the notes / rests and do not click on the triplet symbol but instead select menu format | notes/rests| value and select triplet but deselect the bracket! You can insert the bracket subsequently in graphics mode without anchoring it to the rest. Alternatively download the "TriolenFix" script from Mr Becker's web site.
If I want to change the key for one voice, I have to work my way from staff to staff and on top of it all notes are octaved. Don't modify the key individually for each system, but rather modify the key for this staff in the template system instead. The problem with octaving however remains: capella modifies the notes according to key to a different octave position. It has to be like this, otherwise you end up with ten leger lines when you change from treble clef to bass clef. Use [Ctrl] + arrow key to jump within a voice from staff to staff and transpose by one or two octaves.
Why does the slur not wrap around into the next system? Please distinguish between slur and tie, capella does it as well. The tie, which is created with "=", will split, wrap around and play back correctly. To split a slur, which has no effect on playback, you can use this script.
Why can't I copy and paste an entire system? The clipboard remains empty. Do I have to treat each staff individually? You can select most parts of a score directly with the mouse. However, to select an entire system, you need to hold down [Alt] at the same time. See help or manual chapter 5, page 57, Block operations.
How can I move barlines? You can't. Choose placeholders instead (see help).
The barlines / note stems are too thick / thin. How can I change that? You need to modify the file CAPELLA.DAT. Please backup before you edit this file. Details can be found in the manual and help under "capella.dat".
How can I create and print an empty score sheet? You can find a relevant script at Mr Villiger's web site here. Alternatively, proceed as follows:
  • Select menu insert | clef, key, time signature... | time signature and select "no time signature"
  • Click the "justify" icon or press [Shift] + [Ctrl] + [R]
  • Fill the staff with some notes or rests and mark (select) them
  • Select menu format | notes/rests... | general and select "Invisible".
  • Repeatedly press "enter" to create new staves
  • Cut and paste the invisible notes/rests from the first staff into the additional staves.
You can set all dimensions for line spacing etc in the template system.
How can I quickly change individual notes of a chord? Activate Mouse Mode Entry by touching the Scroll Lock on your keyboard. Click on the note that you want to delete. Click again to place the replacement note. To apply accidentals to the replacement note, hold down either "+" or "-" while clicking the note into place.
How can I set the length of beam groups? You can set this parameter in menu format | system | general | beam grouping
How can I achieve complex enharmonic changes?

To set a Cb in D major, hold down the [-] key while pressing [Shift] + [C].

Alternatively:

  • First set a B
  • Mark this note with [Ctrl] + mouseclick on the note head
  • Press [Alt] + left arrow key to modify the B to Cbb
How can I remove suddenly appearing compressed notes? Select menu format | score | note spacing to the required spacing. These sliders are sometimes wrongly set and you need to adjust them. Select the standard values and allow extra compression.
Where can I find additional music symbols like "capella-jazzy" and how do I install these typefaces?

The installation procedure has copied additional typefaces to this folder on your PC: C:\Program Files\capella-software\capella professional\fonts. Please install these typefaces via Start | Control Panel | Fonts | File | Install New Font. Additional typefaces are offered at this private web site

Why does capella suddenly require me to enter a number between 1 and 999? In some rare cases the installation procedure might generate extremely high or negative values for for some system parameters or the relevant files have been damaged or deleted. These values can be re-set at

extras | options | view and colors | screen refresh or at

extras | options | general | backup copies or at

extras | options | general | undo function or at

extras | options | general | moving graphics and symbols.

Please replace the indicated value with a positive number from within the indicated range (i.e. 1 to 999). As regards the entry for moving graphics and symbols, the value should normally be 16. In most cases a once-off correction will resolve the issue.

How can I generate continuous bass numbering?

Mr. Herzog offers a script here. Alternatively you can use the lyrics text function to number the continuous bass: Use the mouse to place the cursor into the relevant staff and use the spacebar or the arrow keys to jump to the relevant chord.

How can I shift lyrics vertically? See menu format | voices (lyric verses) | lyric verses, where you can use negative numbers to move lyrics text upwards (even on top of the notes), or positive numbers to move it down.
I enter lyric text and when I move to the next staff, the text is always formatted in Times New Roman as standard font. If you want to change the standard font for a score, you should set it for the empty score. It will then apply to all staves as you enter text. If you change your mind half way through entering the text, it is best to finish with the currently selected standard font and afterwards select menu edit | mark | all and then select menu format | voices (lyric verses) | lyric verses, where you can select a different font. See help or manual on page 72 on how to change the default font in CAPELLA.DAT.
Text for maximum 9 verses can allegedly be entered, however, after 3 to 4 verses there is no space left. Click the "L" button on the note editing tool bar. The text cursor appears below the note, where you can enter the text directly. Pressing the down arrow takes you into the next line below, which would be verse two. Because you can only enter 9 verses, you can only step down 8 times. If you find that the text is too close to the staff, you might step lower two or three times, effectively entering the text for the first verse in the 2nd or 3rd verse's line, thereby reducing the possible 9 lines to 6 or 7. Please use one line only for each verse and start in the first line without skipping empty lines. If you want to modify the gap between the staff and the first line of text or between the lines of text, go to menu format | voices (lyric verses) | lyric verses.
I want to use two different fonts to enter lyrics in two different languages; i.e. English in normal and German in italic font style. This can only be achieved with a little magic: If your staff contains two reasonably homophone voices, then you can add the normal text to the one voice and the italic text to the second voice. All you need to do then, is to adjust the spacing for each voice separately in menu format | voices (lyric verses) | lyric verses. If you have only one voice on your staff: Add a second voice via copy and pasting from the first voice, while the original voice maintains its status as "main voice". Next, you format the second voice to be invisible and mute. Then you attach text to the second voice and format it in whatever font style you whish.
How can I enter text for more than 9 verses? Similar to the "magic" solution above, you can create a second voice, format it invisible and mute and attach a further 9 verses to it. Remember to modify the spacing at menu format | voices (lyric verses) | lyric verses.
When entering lyrics, some characters are superimposed on to each other, the text is illegible.

Quick fix: Refresh the display with F9.

Permanent fix: Modify the template system to provide more space below the staff (assuming that the lyrics are to be below the notes). There should be sufficient space to accommodate the entire text including all verses. The areas above and below a staff are indicated by a gray bar in the left margin, once color information is switched on (F11).

During playback capella remains silent.
  • Check whether the master volume is erroneously set to 0 at menu extras | options | sound | output. If so, increase to 127.
  • Try the various drivers, that are offered in the above dialog.
  • Check whether your sound card can play MIDI files independently from capella. If not, your sound card could be defect or incorrectly installed. Check the manufacturer's web site for updated drivers for your current operating system.
  • Check whether the playback options of your sound card have all been activated. Go to start | all programs | accessories | multimedia | volume control and set all sliders to maximum volume and ensure that none of them is muted.
  • You should also check at start | control panel | system | general | hardware | device manager to see that "Sound, video and game controllers" are functioning properly
  • Check that other software, especially games, does not take exclusive occupation of your sound card. Temporarily uninstall such programs.
  • Problems with Windows Media Player 11:

  • Every time you playback a MIDI file with Media Player 11 and you close the Media Player afterwards, the volume slider for "SW Synth" is reset to 0. Please check this setting here.
  • Alternatively, proceed as follows:
    • Right-mouseclick the speaker symbol on the task bar at the bottom right of your monitor
    • From the context menu select open volume control.
    • In case the volume slider for "SW Synth" is not visible:
    • Open menu options | properties, select volume for playback and place a tick mark next to "SW Synth"
    • Click OK
    • Set the volume slider for "SW Synth" all the way to the top.

Until such time that Microsoft has fixed this bug, you need to follow this procedure every time you used Media Player 11 to playback a MIDI file.

Which sound card do you recommend? We do not endorse any specific product. The sound card should be General - MIDI compatible and should support simultaneous input and output, to enable listening to the metronome during rhythmic playing in. Sound cards are available in a wide range of prices. The more expensive ones usually sound a lot better, which is what a musician would look out for. You need to find a balance between your personal requirements and affordability. Ask your dealer for advice and read a product test in one of the trade publications.
Why does capella's playback sound poor and unnatural, while playing a music CD on my PC sounds normal? capella itself does not generate the sound. The sound card alone is responsible for this, more specifically its MIDI functionality. You can improve the sound with a good wave-table-sound card (see above) although the sound will never be 100% realistic. Playback of a music CD is technically a totally different process.
What is your opinion about "on-board-sound"? We do not receive much positive feedback from users with this type of system. Sound quality is usually comparable to a low cost sound card, and we have had reports of breakdowns and complete failure. Not recommended for musicians.
Some sound cards have more than the standard 128 MIDI sounds. How can I use these with capella? capella passes its output via Windows to the MIDI driver of your sound card. capella therefore does not directly communicate with the sound card. As a result, capella cannot address the special features of your sound card. You can however do a MIDI-export from capella and process the file further with a sequencer that can address your sound card directly.
Play-back of ties is not correct. The second note is attacked separately. Please distinguish between slur and tie, capella does it as well. The tie, which is created with the [=] key, will split, wrap around and play back correctly. A slur, is treated differently.
I want to play back only some voices from a larger score, but capella can only play "one" or "all". There is no specific function to achieve this. You can get the required result as follows:
  • Create a voice extraction of the required voices and play it back. There is no need to save the extraction.
  • Set the playback volume to 0 (zero) in the template system for those voices, which you want to suppress.
Playing in (normal entry or step-entry)with the MIDI keyboard doesn't work. (If step-entry doesn't work, you don't need to try real-time entry). Unfortunately, there is no quick fix available. Please check the following:
  • select menu extras | activate midi keyboard link
  • check menu extras | options | sound | input for the correct driver installation. Has the driver been installed at all?
  • Are all cables connected correctly? Very often MIDI-in and MIDI-out are swapped by mistake.
I encounter problems with MIDI -import and -export. Midi -import and -export are handled by capella with the file capconv.dll. This file is updated regularly by the developers, but not always in line with our stepup releases. Please check the developer's web site for the current version.
How can I set different sounds for different voices within one staff? You can't! The sounds are allocated per staff in the template system. Changes within a staff are not possible.
How can I obtain the correct note values, when rhythmically playing in a piano score?
  • Use the score wizard to create a piano score.
  • Position the cursor in the upper staff.
  • Select menu extras | rhythmic playing in... and capture your melody.
  • When finished, proceed to the next step.
  • In the following dialog select number 3 to split the notes into two voices.
  • Indicate your preference where you want the split to occur on the vertical keyboard display. A thin red line will appear.
  • If necessary select number 4 and indicate at 3 the lowest preferred note value.
Scores that were created with capella version 2 are played back by capella professional / capella 2004 at much reduced volume. Save the score in capella professional / capella 2004, possibly under a new name, close it and then re-open it. Also check the volume settings at menu extras | options | sound | playback | dynamic symbols | details.
How can I set dynamic playback of my scores in capella? Select menu extras | options | sound | playback and place a tick mark next to "Use captune". If necessary, adjust the volume levels for dynamic symbols.
How can I separately playback several individual voices from the same staff? Temporarily disable "Use captune" at menu extras | options | sound | playback.
I cannot locate the file "captune.dll" in my capella program installation folder. This extension was released with capella professional / capella 2004 version 5.1-04. You can find the file "captune.dll" there.
Where can I find information about my sound card or my on-board sound chip? Click the windows start button and select control panel | system | hardware | device manager | sound, video and game controllers and at control panel | sound and audio devices.
Real-time play-in via a USB-keyboard causes distinctly audible time lag. MIDI delays USB ports are a well known issue for many users. Try to obtain the most up-to-date drivers for your motherboard, USB ports, your sound card and your MIDI device from their respective manufacturers. You should also close all other programs in order to reduce the load on the CPU.

How can I modify an existing graphic object or text object? Click the object with the mouse to display its blue borderlines or blue editing handles. Now right-click the object and select edit from the context menu.
What is the difference between "plain text" and "formatted text field"? Plain text cannot be formatted and therefore requires a lot less file space. Formatted text can include different fonts and text styles, such as italics or bold, but occupies more disk space. We recommend you use plain text whenever practical.
The score contains "ghost" objects. They appear on-screen and/or on hard copy, but cannot be selected and/or deleted. This can happen, when the object had been moved by more than two systems from its anchor note. By pressing TAB repeatedly, capella highlights all anchor notes within a staff/voice consecutively. Tab through the score until you have located the anchor note and then edit, move or delete the object.
Does capella require each graphic object to be attached to an anchor note? Yes. Except for those objects, that are anchored to the page and thereby have special properties, all other objects must be attached to a note/rest or a group of notes/rests. If that should pose a problem, you can always make notes/rests invisible and mute, but still use them as anchor notes/rests.
Page numbering doesn't work. The text field is anchored to the page footer, but the placeholder "#" is not replaced with the page number. You cannot the use the text field for page numbers. Only plain text is allowed.
When creating a new score, select "page numbers" in step 3 of the score wizard. For page numbering of existing scores, see here.
Triplet brackets and/or slurs are incorrectly drawn in the center of the staff and don't adjust automatically to the notes. Mark the affected area and select menu format | transposition and tick both options in "Adapt to the new position of the notes". Exit the dialog by clicking on "Adapt without transposition". This will not only adjust the elements in the marked area, but from here on all elements will be adjusted correctly.
How can I prevent TIFF-export from including the gray page borders? Make the line white, and thereby invisible. Select menu extras | options | view and colors | other colors and modify "margins in page layout view" accordingly.
How can I type text and /or lyrics using the Cyrillic or Greek alphabet and how can I special characters from foreign languages?

capella professional / capella 2004

  • Update your system with stepup 2004 5.1 – 07 or later here:
  • Use a plain text editor and open file capella.dat, located in your capella program folder.
  • In section [Defaults] look for entry "CharSet=0"
  • Change "0" to one of the following:
    • 238 for Central European (i.e. Polish, Czech, etc.)
    • 204 for Cyrillic
    • 161 for Greek
    • 186 for Baltic
    • 162 for Turkish
  • Save the file and re-start capella.

Try the following workaround:

  • Install a Russian True Type Font, i.e. "Czar" from CorelDraw©. Very affordable older versions of this program are available from various vendors. You can use this typeface in plain text as well as in text fields. For copyright reasons we cannot offer this typeface here. You might also find the file on the internet via one of the popular search engines.
  • Using this typeface correctly, you must use the English keyboard layout. That is to say, you will not find the letters in the position where they would be on a proper Cyrillic keyboard.
  • Advanced users can install a Russian copy of Windows in a separate partition and then install capella into that partition as well.
The last line of a block of text is not printed. End the last line with [Ctrl] + [Enter].
How can I set the monitor to automatically refresh? Select menu extras | options | view and colors | screen refresh rate. Tick automatic refresh and set a time interval to suit your requirements.
How can I change the default typeface in capella?
  • Make a backup copy of file "capella.dat" which is located in your program files/capella-software/capella professional/data folder.
  • Open the original file with a plain text editor i.e. Notepad.
  • In sections [Defaults] you find the entry for font as "Times New Roman".
  • Change it to suit your requirements and make sure to avoid spelling errors, otherwise capella cannot find the relevant font file.

How can I print sideways in two columns? This is not possible.
Some users have had excellent results with FinePrint, to achieve this.
You could also process each sheet of paper twice: Go to menu file | page layout and select landscape page orientation. Set margins to 10mm top left and bottom and set right margin to 158mm. You can then print on the left half of the sheet of paper. Then set page margins to 10mm top, right and bottom and set left margin to 158mm and print onto the right half of the paper. Naturally, you must first set the matching dimensions in the template system.
How can I create and print an empty score sheet? You can find an appropriate script at Mr Villiger's web site here. Alternatively, proceed as follows:
  • Select "no bar"
  • Switch on margin setting
  • Fill the staff with some notes or rests
  • Format the notes/rests "invisible"
  • Repeatedly press "enter" to create new staves
  • Cut and paste the invisible notes/rests from the first staff into the additional staves.
You can set all dimensions for line spacing etc in the template system.
Notes are displayed large on screen, but print tiny. What is wrong? The size you see on the monitor is not the same as the printed size. Both are set separately.(see above)

capella 2002

Printout is corrupted. A varying number of the notes appears in tiny print in the top left corner.
Please download the latest stepup! This problem has been resolved.
The last character within a text field does not print. Slightly stretch the text field to the right.
When printing the score, some of the notes next to text fields are hidden. Right click the text field and from the context menu select order | behind notes.
