Michael Praetorius on his 450th birthday

Many people know Michael Praetorius (1571-1621), especially "Es ist ein Ros entsprungen" ("It is a rose sprung up"), his most popular Christmas carol. He composed and edited entire chorale books and thus had a decisive influence on congregational singing in the Reformation era. He was extremely pragmatic and realized many songs in several variants and degrees of difficulty also picking up regional peculiarities. Examples of this work can be found here: "Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland" ("Savior of the nations, come") and "Wie schön leuchtet der Morgenstern" ("How lovely shines the morning star").

In addition, he also composed for professional bands and ensembles of his time and artistically set Latin texts to music. For example, the angel's proclamation to Maria "Ingressus Angelus" (part of the Ave Maria), which he wrote entirely in the style of vocal polyphony.
